Shopping in Antwerp: Noord

We start our shopping tour of Antwerp in ‘Noord’ (North), a very popular and lively neighbourhood. Here you can shop in the Carnotstraat, Offerandestraat and on the Turnhoutsebaan. All stores sell cheaper versions of what you’ll find on the Meir. Many young people live here and they like the ‘less is okay’-principle. Apart from that, ‘Noord’ is simply a very attractive, hip place to be.

The modern Designcenter De Winkelhaak can be found where the Offerandestraat meets the Lange Winkelhaakstraat. This is a place where design, architecture, multimedia and graphic design encounter each other. The centre is alive and kicking. The small design shops with nice items are definitely worth a visit and Bar d’Office is a good place for a cup of coffee.

Nearly opposite the Designcenter you can find Atelier Solarshop, a place where a lot can happen too. For the audience it’s mainly a gallery where young artists and designers regularly sell or exhibit their art. It’s always interesting to check what’s available.

We leave ‘Noord’ for the Meir, quite a contrast indeed.

Shopping in Antwerp: Meir

This pedestrians-only boulevard rents its magnificent shopping premises to the big European chains. Here you’ll find H&M, Zara, Mango, Sfera, Bershka, Pull and Bear, River Island, Hema, P&C and many more. The boulevard runs through beautiful 18th & 19th century buildings so don’t be afraid to look up and admire them. The renovated historical architecture will leave you flabbergasted.

Shopping in Antwerp: Quartier Latin

The Leopoldstraat, the Schuttershofstraat and Hopland form the Quartier Latin, not a genuine Antwerp name but given to the neighbourhood comparing the luxurious streets to those of other major cities like Paris. Some ‘expensive’ names can be found in Quartier Latin: Essentiel, Burberry, Mer du Nord and Ralph Lauren prank next to each other.

Shopping in Antwerp: Wilde Zee

The Wilde Zee is a romantic name for 5 incredibly charming pedestrian-only streets. These five are centered around a nice little city square. The terrace of Lombardia has claimed the square and serves as an ideal lunch spot, just like any other salad or fruit bar in this area.

Your shopping options here are diverse: from make-up, design, gifts, delicacies, chocolate, small boutiques, shoes, delicious ice cream and exclusive stores to the best fresh fish in the city. This place has it all: from basic to posh and from casual to trendy.

A few examples are Mac Cosmetics, Kiehl’s, Sasha, Iittala, Rituals, APC, Sienna Boutique and Superdry Store. You can reach the historic centre or the fashion district easily via the Wilde Zee.

Shopping in Antwerp: Historic Centre

Groenplaats, Grote Markt, Consciensceplein, Vrijdagmarkt, Melkmarkt, Hoogstraat and Kloosterstraat are places that you just have to see. It’s a great neighbourhood but there are not that many stores. On a rainy day you can find comfort in the Grand Bazar Shopping Centre, though. There are about 50 stores, such as Women’s Secret, Fnac, Mango, Bodyshop en Accessorize. You can also do your groceries and drink a delicious juice.

Shopping in Antwerp: Fashion District

It’s no coincidence that Antwerp prides itself with the title of fashion city, many famous and acclaimed designers originate from here. You can immerse yourself in the authentic Belgian fashion atmosphere in the Nationalestraat. The Flanders Fashion Institute, the Fashion Museum (MoMu), the fashion department of the academy and the Copyright Bookshop can all be found in the ModeNatie. Take a look inside because this is the fashion heart which shines on the rest of the city of Antwerp. The stores of Dries van Noten, Anna Heylen and Walter van Beirendonck are close to the Nationalestraat.

If you feel young and hip, you should check out the Kammenstraat, Antwerp’s trendiest street with stores like American Apparel, Fish and Chips, Zappa, a.puur.a., Lee Cooper, Diesel, Who’s That Girl and Levi’s.
